Welcome back, Product Bosses! Have you ever felt like you had to keep going, going, going just to prove to yourself that you were doing enough, even when you couldn't point to the results to show for it? In this episode, I'm talking about why more hours and more hustle rarely equal more growth, and what actually moves the needle instead: a rhythm, a system, and a plan built around the life you actually want.
WHY WORKING MORE ISN'T THE SAME AS WORKING SMARTER
I was recently coaching a student who felt like she was failing because she wasn't doing 10 things at once. She'd just spent two weeks straight getting her manufacturing and products ready for the holiday season, running on pure go-go-go energy, and when the results from her markets didn't match the effort, she still felt like she had to keep pushing. Here's the truth: sometimes we work more simply because we don't know what else to do. If you're working hard but not seeing it show up in your bank account or in your business's growth, you might be working to stay busy rather than working with intention.
So what did we actually do together? We sat down and got clear on her goals, not just revenue goals, but the life she wanted: time with her family, commitments she'd already made, the vision for her quarter. Then we backed into those goals. If it was revenue, we backed into the number. If it was time with her kids, we backed into that too. We broke the quarter down into weeks, looked at what she had to sell, what her average order value was, and what opportunities like markets or wholesale buying seasons were coming up. And once she had that plan, something interesting happened. She told me she felt permission to rest, because after a big push, there's real value in actually enjoying what you just built instead of immediately starting the next sprint. She rested for a couple of days, then we got back on the horse and followed the plan. Her words afterward: she'd never felt more focused, because she wasn't just busy, she was working a plan she'd built on purpose.
This is where the 15-Minute CEO Review comes in, and it's simple enough to start this week. Every Sunday night or Monday morning, ask yourself four questions: What worked last week? What didn't work last week? Where do I want to focus this week? And what's the one thing that will move sales forward this week? That's it, about 15 minutes, and suddenly you have a plan instead of flying by the seat of your pants. Pair that with a weekly rhythm, a set day for your CEO review, a day for emailing your list, a day for batching content, days for making or manufacturing, and a decision about when you actually ship, and every day starts to have intention behind it. You're not competing with Amazon's shipping speed, and you don't have to check email all day either. Willpower isn't a renewable resource, but consistency is what makes it compound. The businesses that grow aren't the ones hustling the hardest, they're the ones who trust their system more than their mood on any given day.
The key takeaways I want you to remember are:
Busy isn't the same as effective. If your effort isn't showing up in results, the answer usually isn't more hours, it's more intention behind the hours you already have.
Build your week around a rhythm, not a mood. Assign each day a purpose, whether that's emails, content, production, or your CEO review, and let consistency do the compounding for you.
Run the 15-Minute CEO Review weekly. Four questions, 15 minutes, and you walk into the week with a plan instead of guessing what to focus on next.
Product Boss, remember: structure is what makes creativity sustainable, not the other way around. You don't need to hustle harder, you need a rhythm that's aligned with the life you're actually trying to build.
