Lessons Learned From Etsy, Makers & Handmade Business Owners

Today, we’re interviewing some incredible product bosses who are handmade business makers and owners. Half the members in our community are makers, so we know that showcasing their success is something that can really inspire you to level up your business and your profits.

How to Protect Your Biz When All Your Sales Come from One Place

For instance, one of our Multi-Stream Machine and Mastermind students had three successful Etsy shops, but she accidentally used a word that was trademarked and Etsy shut down her shops and she had to start from scratch again.

A second example comes from another one of our Multi-Stream Machine students who has her business on Etsy. A customer complained about her bestseller – the one product she built her entire business around – and that product was taken down.

Now, we aren’t saying you should steer clear of Etsy or even move away from the one platform you’re on because this could happen on any platform you don’t own! Amazon could change their terms of service to something that doesn’t work for you at any time. Shopify could crash. Even if you have your own website, it could be hacked. Remember how helpless some people felt when Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all went down at the same time in 2021? 

What’s the best solution to protect yourself and your business? Get. Onto. More. Platforms!

So, then why do you think that you have to create every single one of your products with your own two hands? The answer is you don’t. It’s just a limiting belief that you, as a maker and product boss, have about your business! 

It’s very common to have these limiting beliefs – especially as a maker. So just know you aren’t alone, but that we are here to help. We all feel like this at some point after starting a business. It’s completely normal. 

Follow These Tips To Get Off The Hamster Wheel & Take Your Business to the Next Level

You just need to learn how to get off the wheel and start taking steps forward. There are a few basic rules to remember that can completely turn your company's growth around. A lot of you are scared of change. But remember that that’s also normal. Change is a good thing and it’s what we want to achieve so that your business can grow.

The first major tip we cover in this episode is the importance of needle movers. A needle mover is something that takes little effort but pays off with lots of return on investment (ROI). We like to focus on small things that either save time or earn money in the long run. One of the most common things people view as a needle mover is social media, but, the truth is, this isn’t always the case – especially lately. For a lot of people, ROI on social media isn’t actually that strong. 

A better example is taking the time to fully understand your numbers. For example, most businesses operate on the 80/20 principle which means that 20% of their products account for 80% of their revenue. If you know which 20% of your products are your best sellers, you can better tailor your whole business operation to capitalize on those products.
